I grew up in Hampshire County, West Virginia, where many Kuykendalls (afer migrating from the Minisink River area in New York and the Delaware River Gap) settled in the l740s. When Washington surveyed the area for Lord Fairfax many Kuykendalls moved west to avoid paying rent on land they considered theirs. Dr. George Benson Kuykendall's book is the best source for family history which has photos from the South Branch of the Potomac. I will be publishing a book (thanks to Texas Press) which covers some of the valley's history in a creative non-fiction manner. Let me know if you are interested.
